16 Jan Time Line Therapy™
There is a growing understanding in health research on the damaging physical effects of past negative emotions and limiting beliefs. It has shown early anguish can create susceptibility to conditions involving inflammatory processes including heart disease, stress, fear, phobias and anxiety.
Early negative emotional memories have also been connected to chronic fatigue syndrome (Heim-2006) and breast cancer (Bower-2014). In addition to these are known effects of negative memories on depression (Chapman-2004).
There is mounting proof that, when compared to those occurring in adulthood, negative emotional memories from childhood are related to more severe post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms in older adults (PTSD) (Ogle-2013).
- The first stage after a negative emotional event, the person will experience heightened anxiety, which then transitions into anger.
- The following phase is one of sadness which involves compassion for themselves. There may also be a point of which the client has compassion for the person who they are attempting to make peace with. The client recognizes at both a logical and emotional level that the individual was also a receiver of their own past negative life situations. Emotional forgiveness may follow for the judged party.
Time Line Therapy™ involves pin-pointing which relationships have been prominent in creating current psychological problems for the client and accordingly addressing each relationship in a structured fashion on the clients Time-Line.
Obviously, everyone has had negative emotional experiences and negative emotions in their past, and the specific factors that lead to the detrimental memory storage must be identified to determine which relationships need to be addressed.
Time Line Therapy™ is a procedure which neutralizes the anxiety, anger, sadness, hurt, guilt and shame of the past negative memories.
Time Line Therapy™ has been proposed as a therapeutic approach to deal with negative memories from any relationship – past or present. Also, it is important to recognize the contributions of ongoing factors (e.g. pain, life stressors) and loss issues (e.g. desired relationship, job). Negative emotional memories and negative emotions are understood to be of extreme importance in the clinical approach.
If negative memories are addressed effectively, the benefits from other current-day treatment approaches and education on loss and emotional pain can be greatly enhanced.
